Boxes Before Helmets

Cricket batsmen faced blazing fast bowlers for nearly a century without helmets, but one form of protection arrived much earlier — the “box.” First introduced in the late 19th century, the box (or abdominal guard) quickly became a staple of a player’s gear, offering protection where it mattered most. Helmets, by contrast, didn’t become common until the late 1970s, meaning cricketers spent decades guarding only below the waist while leaving their heads exposed to bouncers.
