History

Who was the first nation to send an Astronaut to space?

On April 12, 1961, Russia (formally the Soviet Union) made history by sending Yuri Gagarin into space aboard Vostok 1, making him the first human to orbit Earth. This groundbreaking mission marked the dawn of human space exploration and a defining moment in the Space Race.

Tragically, 7 years later, Yuri Gagarin died at the age of 34 in a jet crash during a routine training flight in a MiG-15 near Moscow.

Tech & Engineering

Wright Flyer

The Wright Flyer was an aircraft that made the first sustained flight by a manned heavier-than-air powered and controlled airplane. This first Historic flight took place on December 17th 1903 when a 12 second flight was completed, a distance of 36m was travelled.

Source Wright Brothers

The Wright Flyer was the product of four years of research and development by Wilbur and Orville Wright (Wright Brothers). Some of the key innovations that allowed the Wright Brothers to achieve controlled flight with this plane included:

  1. Wing Warping: Allowed them to twist or warp the wings to control the aircraft's roll (tilting from side to side).

  2. 3-Axis Control: The Wright brothers implemented a system of three-axis control, which included roll (wing warping), pitch (raising and lowering the front elevator), and yaw (turning the aircraft using the rudder).

Wind Tunnel Testing: The Wright brothers conducted extensive wind tunnel testing to refine the shape of the wings and other components.

Sport

Hunter-Gatherer

Hunter-gatherers were incredibly fit, often more so than most modern humans. Their daily lives involved constant movement: walking, running, climbing, and lifting as part of hunting, foraging, and survival.

  • Daily activity: Studies suggest hunter-gatherers walked 10–15 km (6–9 miles) per day

  • Strength and endurance: They carried heavy loads (like meat, firewood, or children), requiring both muscular strength and stamina.

  • Lean and agile: Their bodies were typically lean, strong, and agile, with low rates of obesity and chronic disease—thanks to a natural diet and active lifestyle.
