History

Shinjuku Station

Shinjuku Station in Tokyo is the busiest transport hub in the world, handling over 3.5 million passengers each day. With more than 200 exits and connections across multiple rail and subway lines, it’s less a station and more a small city beneath the streets.

It first opened in 1885 as a modest stop on Japan’s expanding railway network, but rapidly grew alongside Tokyo’s population and urban development. Today, it stands as a symbol of the city’s scale and efficiency, moving millions of people with remarkable precision every single day.

Science

Why some people hate coriander?

Some people think coriander tastes fresh and citrusy, while others think it tastes like soap.

This isn’t just preference, it’s genetic. A variation in the OR6A2 gene makes certain people more sensitive to aldehydes, compounds found in both coriander and soap. So for some, it’s delicious, for others it’s basically dishwashing liquid.

How Dams Release Water

Dams use three main systems to release water safely and efficiently:

  • Spillways act like emergency overflows. When water rises too high, it flows over or through the spillway to prevent flooding—no moving parts needed.

  • Sluice gates are adjustable gates near the dam’s base. Engineers lift or lower them to let water rush out at high speed, often to manage sediment or control river flow.

  • Outlet valves are like giant faucets. They control steady water release for irrigation, drinking supply, or power generation.

Nature & Geography

When is Mount Everest climbable?

The main climbing window is in late April to May, just before the summer monsoon. During this short period, winds drop and weather becomes slightly more stable, giving climbers their best chance to reach the summit.

A smaller, less common window also occurs in September to early October after the monsoon, but conditions are often less predictable. Outside these times, extreme winds and heavy snowfall make the mountain far too dangerous to climb.

Business & Politics

Nvidia

Has evolved from a gaming graphics company into one of the most influential tech firms in the world. Its GPUs, once designed for video games, are now the backbone of artificial intelligence, powering everything from chatbots to data centres.

This shift has driven a massive rise in its share price, with Nvidia stock climbing dramatically over recent years and pushing its market value above $4.5 trillion, making it one of the most valuable companies globally.

Arts & Literature

Frederic Remington (b. 1861 d. 1909)

Was one of the most famous artists of the American West, known for capturing cowboys, soldiers, and frontier life. Later in his career, his style shifted toward quieter, more atmospheric scenes focused on mood and light.

Coming to the Call (1905) reflects this change, showing a calm wilderness with a moose at the water’s edge while a hidden hunter waits nearby. The scene feels peaceful at first, but carries a subtle tension beneath the surface.

The painting recently made headlines after selling for around $13.3 million in 2026, setting a new record for Remington’s work.

Entertainment

Beatles Members

The Beatles were one of the most influential and iconic rock bands in history. The group consisted of four members:

  1. John Lennon: Was a singer, songwriter, and rhythm guitarist. After the Beatles, he had a successful solo career but was tragically assassinated in 1980.

  2. Paul McCartney: Was a singer, songwriter, and bassist. McCartney also had a successful solo career and continues to perform and record music.

  3. George Harrison: Was the lead guitarist of the Beatles and contributed both as a songwriter and a vocalist. Harrison passed away from lung cancer in 2001.

  4. Ringo Starr: Was the drummer of the Beatles and occasionally contributed vocals to the group's songs. He became known for his distinctive drumming style and later had a successful career as a solo artist and actor.
