History

The Long History of the Punt

Sports gambling has been around for centuries. Its earliest clear forerunners appeared in ancient Greece and Rome, where people wagered on athletic contests, chariot races and other public spectacles. In its more organised form, sports betting began to take shape in late-18th-century Britain, particularly around horse racing, where bookmakers started formalising odds and wagers.

Science

Homemade Lava Lamp

Looking for a fun science activity to try at home? A homemade lava lamp is an easy project that uses simple household items while showing how density and chemical reactions work. All you need is a clear bottle, water, vegetable oil, food colouring and a fizzy tablet such as Alka-Seltzer.

Fill the bottle partway with water, top it up with oil, add a few drops of colouring, then drop in part of the tablet and watch the coloured bubbles rise and fall. The effect happens because oil and water do not mix, and the fizzy tablet releases gas that lifts the coloured water before it sinks again.

Tech & Engineering

Smart Roads of the Future

Engineers are currently developing “smart roads” embedded with sensors and solar panels that can charge electric cars as they drive and even alert authorities to accidents in real time.

Sport

Ultimate Frisbee

Is a fast-paced team sport that combines the movement of soccer, the spacing of basketball and the aerial skill of catching a flying disc. Played between two teams, the aim is to pass the disc down the field and catch it inside the end zone to score.

Nature & Geography

From Flat to Flammable

Volcanoes form when molten rock, known as magma, rises from deep beneath the Earth’s surface and pushes through weak points in the crust. This most often happens near tectonic plate boundaries, where plates move apart or collide, but volcanoes can also form over “hotspots” where heat from the mantle melts rock below the surface. As pressure builds, magma erupts through vents and cools into layers of lava, ash and rock. Over time, repeated eruptions build the volcano into the mountains and cones we recognise today.

Business & Politics

How War Is Officially Waged

In the past, countries sometimes began war with a formal declaration, and the 1907 Hague Convention (III) stated that hostilities should not begin without prior and explicit warning, either through a declaration of war or an ultimatum with a conditional declaration. After 1945, the legal framework changed significantly with the United Nations Charter, which says states must refrain from the threat or use of force against another state, except in limited cases such as self-defence after an armed attack or when the UN Security Council authorises force.

Arts & Literature

Remember the Name Gerhard Richter

One of the most widely regarded modern-day painters is Gerhard Richter. Major institutions describe him as one of the most influential painters working today, and his long career spans both photorealistic and abstract painting, which is a big part of why he is so highly regarded.

Entertainment

Looney Tunes

Since the 1930s, Looney Tunes has brought laughter and wild adventures to screens worldwide. Featuring iconic characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig, this series set the standard for slapstick humour and timeless animation — proving that a clever rabbit and a wacky duck can keep us entertained for generations
