Science

Weaker Gravity = Less Weight

No diets, no workouts—just weaker gravity! Thanks to an ancient ice sheet that squashed the Earth’s crust, Hudson Bay in Canada has slightly weaker gravity then the global average. The effect is tiny (you’d weigh about 3.5 grams less if you're 70 kg), but hey, if you ever want to feel a tiny bit lighter without dieting—head to Hudson Bay! 😆

Tech & Engineering

Invention of the washing machine

The first mechanical hand cranked washing machines were invented during the late 18th century. Jacob Christian Schäffer (German Botanist) invented the drum washer in 1767, which was followed by the wooden washing machine patented by Nathaniel Briggs (American Inventor) in 1797.

The tub was filled with water and then rotated using a handle so that the garmets glided across the fluted interior removing grime and dirt.

Nature & Geography

Maria Sibylla Merian

Did you know that in the 1500s, people didn’t realise caterpillars turned into butterflies? Back then, many believed in “spontaneous generation” — the idea that living things could just appear out of nowhere. So when a butterfly emerged from a cocoon, it seemed more like magic than nature.

It wasn’t until the 1600s that German naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian carefully documented the insect life cycle, proving that metamorphosis was real. Her work changed how we understand insects — and helped debunk some very odd theories.

Business & Politics

Low-hanging fruit

Have you heard the phrase “low-hanging fruit” before? In business when a task is a “low-hanging fruit” it means it is one that can be completed easily and quickly. From a business perspective some synonyms for this phrase would include “quick wins”, “no-brainers” and “easily accomplished”.

The phrase is derived from the idea that fruit hanging low on a tree is easy to reach and pick, whilst fruit higher up may require more effort to get.
