Bringing communication into the… 19th century

The telegram was once one of the fastest ways to send messages over long distances, revolutionising communication in the 19th century. Its development was closely linked to the electric telegraph, with Samuel Morse helping popularise the system in the 1840s through the use of Morse code. Messages could be sent across cities, countries, and eventually continents in a fraction of the time required by letters, making telegrams vital for business, government, journalism, and personal news.

With today’s global population at about 8 billion, that means nearly 7% of all humans who have ever lived are alive right now—a testament to how explosive population growth has been in just the last few centuries.

Out With The Old And In With The New

The shift from halogen to LED lighting was a global transition that gathered pace across the 2000s and 2010s, as LEDs became brighter, cheaper, and far more energy efficient. Rather than happening in a single year, the change took place as governments tightened efficiency rules and consumers increasingly chose longer-lasting bulbs with lower running costs. A major milestone came in the European Union, where many halogen bulbs stopped being sold from 1 September 2018, while international energy agencies have since treated LEDs as the clear future of lighting.

The Monopoly Paradox

Monopoly wasn’t invented to celebrate real estate tycoons—it was created in 1903 by Lizzie Magie as The Landlord’s Game, a warning about the dangers of concentrated wealth. Ironically, when Parker Brothers later commercialised it, the message flipped—and it became one of the world’s best-selling games about getting rich.
