The Biggest Art Auction Month of 2026 Opens This Week. Why 71,105 Investors Are Watching Closely.

Sotheby's and Christie's open their New York spring sales this month. High auction house estimates have $45 million for a Basquiat. $70 million for a Rothko. $100 million on a Pollock at Christie's.

This is coming off the heels of a US art market that grew 23% in Q1 2026 over the same period last year. Sotheby’s ended 2025 with 17% year-over-year growth. Their CEO called last year's bidder demand "the highest we have ever experienced."

The people filling those auction rooms are billionaires, family offices, institutional collectors -- they've held blue-chip art through various market cycles.

71,000+ investors are now in the same market through Masterworks. Former Sotheby's and Christie's specialists on the acquisition committee. 29 exits to-date and $68M in distributions back, including amount invested, from their 525+ works offered. Net annualized returns like 16.5%, 17.6%, and 17.8%, not including those unsold.

Investing involves risk. Past performance is not indicative of future returns. See important disclosures at masterworks.com/cd.

Science

Twins

Scientists have discovered that identical twins are not always completely genetically identical. Although they begin with nearly the same DNA, small genetic mutations can occur as cells divide and grow throughout life. This means one twin may develop certain diseases, traits, or even different responses to medication that the other does not.

The discovery has helped researchers better understand how both genetics and life experiences shape the human body, and why DNA alone does not always determine our future health.

Sporting Scandals

Some of the biggest cheating scandals in sports history have completely changed their games. Lance Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles after a major doping investigation revealed years of performance-enhancing drug use. In baseball, the Houston Astros were caught using electronic sign-stealing methods during their 2017 championship season.

Cricket also saw major controversy during Australia’s 2018 “Sandpapergate” scandal, where players were caught illegally altering the ball during a Test match in South Africa.

The Rise and Fall of Whale Hunting

Commercial whale hunting once operated on a massive global scale, with whales hunted for oil, meat, and materials used in products like soap and cosmetics. By the mid-20th century, some whale populations had been pushed close to extinction due to industrial hunting methods and factory ships.

Today, most commercial whaling is banned under international agreements, although a small number of countries still allow limited whale hunting for cultural, scientific, or commercial reasons. Conservation efforts in recent decades have helped several whale species slowly recover.
