History

The first elevator/lift

The first modern elevator was invented by Elisha Otis in 1853. He demonstrated a safety elevator with a braking system at the New York World's Fair, which made elevators safe for passenger use. His design led to the widespread use of elevators in buildings, especially skyscrapers.

Science

Three hearts and blue blood — what am I?

An Octopus. Octopuses have three hearts. One heart pumps blood to the rest of the body, while the other two pump it to the gills. Their blood is blue because it contains a special molecule called hemocyanin, which helps them survive in cold water with less oxygen.

Tech & Engineering

Solid-State Batteries

Solid-state batteries are one of the most anticipated breakthroughs in energy storage—and they’re finally getting close to reality. Major companies like Toyota, Samsung, and QuantumScape are racing to bring them to market, with commercial models expected by 2027, and prototypes already being tested.

Instead of a flammable liquid electrolyte (used in lithium-ion), solid-state batteries use a solid electrolyte—made from ceramic, glass, or polymers. This change allows for:

  • Denser energy storage (more range in EVs)

  • Faster charging with less heat

  • Smaller and lighter battery packs

Solid-state batteries could double the range of electric vehicles, eliminate charging anxiety, and make devices thinner, safer, and longer-lasting.

Sport

The Ashes

Is a legendary Test cricket series played between England and Australia, dating back to 1882. The name comes from a satirical obituary published after Australia’s shock win at The Oval, stating that English cricket had "died" and its ashes would be taken to Australia.

The two nations now compete for a small urn—symbolic of those "ashes"—in a five-match series held roughly every two years, alternating between England and Australia.

Nature & Geography

Movile Cave

Hidden in Romania and sealed off for over 5 million years, Movile Cave hosts a bizarre ecosystem that survives without sunlight. Instead of photosynthesis, life here relies on chemosynthetic bacteria that feed on toxic gases like hydrogen sulfide.

Discovered in 1986, the cave is home to dozens of unique species found nowhere else—like blind spiders and strange worms. It’s one of Earth’s most alien environments, offering clues to how life might exist on other planets.

Business & Politics

Electric Vehicles (EVs)

Both plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electrical vehicles (BEV) have been exponentially increasing in sales since 2020. It is now estimated that over 20 million EV’s have been sold worldwide (more then 10 million sold in 2022 alone). It is predicted that more then 20 million will be sold in 2025.

Arts & Literature

Crime and Punishment

Written by Fyodor Dostoevsky in 1866, it follows Raskolnikov, a man who believes he can get away with murder. The novel explores his guilt, morality, and search for redemption. It’s a classic psychological study of crime and conscience.

Entertainment

MOS

MOS means filming a scene without recording any sound, allowing dialogue and audio to be added later in post-production.
