When did the French Revolution Start?
In 1789, the French Revolution began as economic hardship and inequality fuelled unrest. In May 1789, the Estates-General met, leading to the creation of the National Assembly. Tensions peaked later that year on July 14th with the storming of the Bastille, a symbol of royal oppression, marking the start of a revolution that would forever change France.

Science
You Shrink During the Day
Your spine compresses under gravity as you stand and sit, making you up to 1–2 cm shorter by night — and taller again after sleeping.
Tech & Engineering
Why Airplane Windows Are Rounded
Early aircraft actually had square windows — until engineers discovered they created dangerous stress points. At high altitudes, repeated pressurisation caused cracks to form at the sharp corners, leading to catastrophic failures in the 1950s. While rounded windows distribute pressure evenly.

Boxing in a Square Ring? 🙃
Originally, boxing matches took place outdoors, with spectators forming a literal ring around the fighters. A circle was easy to draw in dirt, and the name “ring” naturally described the space.
However, in the 18th century, as boxing became more organised, the ring was formalised with ropes and corner posts — making a square. But by then, the name "ring" had already stuck, so even today, fighters square off in a ring… that's a box.

Nature & Geography
Potato Eyes
Those little “eyes” on a potato aren’t just quirks — they’re growth buds. Each one is a tiny node capable of sprouting into a whole new plant, making potatoes masters of cloning themselves. Leave a potato in the cupboard long enough and you’ll see it in action, as shoots begin to grow from these points. It’s also why farmers can cut a potato into pieces, plant them, and grow multiple plants from just one.

Business & Politics
“Ghost Airports”
Some airports are built with big ambitions — but barely see any flights. Known as “ghost airports,” they’re often the result of governments overestimating demand or trying to stimulate regional growth. Examples include Ciudad Real Central Airport in Spain and Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport in Sri Lanka — billion-dollar projects that remain largely empty, showing how infrastructure and politics don’t always align with reality.

Why Some Old Books Smell So Good
That nostalgic “old book smell” isn’t just in your head, it’s chemistry. As paper ages, compounds like lignin (from wood pulp) break down and release subtle scents, including vanilla, almond, and even a hint of grass. Each book develops its own unique aroma over time, depending on its materials and storage. It’s essentially a slow chemical fingerprint, one you can smell.
Entertainment
The Most Streamed Song of All Time
The most streamed song in history is Blinding Lights by The Weeknd. Released in 2019, its retro 80s sound and massive global appeal helped it dominate platforms like Spotify, racking up billions of streams.
