History

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Located in modern day Iraq, these gardens were constructed by King Nebuchadnezzar II who ruled Babylon from 605 to 562 BC. It is believed the purpose of the gardens was to please his wife Amytis, who missed the green hills and lush landscapes of her own homeland.

The key characteristics of the Hanging Gardens included:

  • Elevated terraces to resemble a mountain or stepped pyramid

  • An advanced irrigation system to ensure the garden thrived

  • Exotic plant life featured throughout

  • The architectural beauty of the design, with stone columns, sculptures and walkways among the greenery

Science

Frozen in Time

As of 2024, there are approximately 500 to 600 people who have been cryonically preserved (i.e., their bodies or brains frozen after legal death) worldwide.

  • Most of these individuals are preserved in the United States, primarily by:

    • Alcor Life Extension Foundation (Arizona) – ~200 patients

    • Cryonics Institute (Michigan) – ~200+ patients

  • A few others are preserved by smaller international organisations, such as KrioRus (Russia) and Tomorrow Biostasis (Germany).

In addition, there are thousands more people who have signed up and made financial arrangements to be cryopreserved after death.

Business & Politics

Blue Chip Stocks

Are shares of large, reliable companies with strong track records—like Apple or Coca-Cola. The term comes from poker, where blue chips are the highest in value. It was first used in the 1920s to describe top-tier stocks, and today it still means stability and long-term strength in the market.

Arts & Literature

“The Pen is Mightier Than the Sword”

Coined by Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1839, this phrase means words and ideas can be more powerful than violence. From speeches to books, history shows that lasting change often starts with a pen, not a weapon.

Though he died in 2006 from a stingray injury, his legacy lives on through his family’s conservation work and global influence on wildlife education.
