History

On this day….

March 26, 1997, 39 members of the Heaven's Gate cult committed mass suicide, believing that they would ascend to a higher plane of existence aboard a spacecraft following the comet Hale-Bopp. Led by Marshall Applewhite, the group laid down on the floor to die after ingesting a lethal mixture of phenobarbital (anti-seizure meds) and vodka.

The tragic event shocked the world, raising awareness of the dangers of religious extremism and mind control.

The referees missed the call, and Maradona later credited it to “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God.” Argentina won the match and then went on to beat West Germany in the final.
