History

The Terracotta Army

In 1974, farmers digging a well in Xi’an, China, struck more than water—they unearthed a forgotten army buried for over 2,000 years. What they found was the Terracotta Army, a vast force of life-sized clay soldiers built to guard the tomb of China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang.

Dating back to around 210 BCE, this underground army includes over 8,000 soldiers, 600 horses, chariots, and generals, each with distinct facial features, hairstyles, and armour. No two are exactly alike—an astonishing feat of ancient craftsmanship. The figures were originally painted in vibrant coluors, though much of the pigment has faded with time.

Tech & Engineering

Is the Eiffel Tower getting taller?

Yes and no. The Eiffel Tower's height changes due to the thermal expansion of metal. In the warmer months, heat causes the iron structure to expand, increasing its height by up to 15 cm (6 inches). In contrast, during colder months, it contracts back down to its original size.

Breaking the Impossible: The Sub-2-Hour Marathon

For decades, a marathon under 2 hours was considered impossible—until Eliud Kipchoge proved otherwise.

On October 12, 2019, in Vienna, Austria, the Kenyan runner completed 42.195 km in a mind-blowing 1:59:40. Though not an official world record (due to pacers, a pace car, and controlled conditions), it was a historic human achievement—a moment that redefined the limits of endurance. Kipchoge ran at an average pace of 2:50 per kilometre (or 4:34 per mile).

Nature & Geography

The Western Black Rhino

In 2011, the Western Black Rhinoceros was officially declared extinct—a sobering symbol of how human actions can erase a species from the planet.

Once roaming the savanna’s of central and western Africa, this subspecies of black rhino was hunted relentlessly for its horn. By the early 2000s, only a few remained. Conservationists searched in vain. None were ever found again.

Business & Politics

Coca-Cola was originally marketed as medicine

In 1886, American pharmacist John Pemberton created an early version of Coca-Cola as a remedy for minor ailments like headaches and fatigue.

This original formula contained coca leaf extract (which includes small amounts of cocaine), giving the drink its stimulating effect. This is where the name "Coca-Cola" comes from.
