History

The Dancing Plague of 1518

In the summer of 1518, Strasbourg (then part of the Holy Roman Empire) was struck by one of history’s strangest outbreaks: dozens of townspeople began dancing uncontrollably in the streets. What started with one woman soon grew to hundreds, many collapsing from exhaustion, and some reportedly dancing to their deaths.

Authorities believed the cure was more dancing and even hired musicians—only fuelling the frenzy. Today, theories range from mass psychogenic illness (stress-induced hysteria) to ergot poisoning from mouldy rye.

Tech & Engineering

The First Webcam

Long before video calls and livestreams, the very first webcam had a far humbler purpose: coffee. In 1991, researchers at Cambridge University set up a camera pointing at their office coffee pot. The live feed let them check the pot from their desks, saving wasted trips for an empty cup. This quirky experiment not only solved a daily annoyance—it quietly pioneered the idea of real-time video streaming that we now take for granted.

Arts & Literature

The Titanic was Predicted in Fiction

In 1898, author Morgan Robertson wrote a novella called Futility about a massive “unsinkable” ship named the Titan that strikes an iceberg and sinks in the North Atlantic. Fourteen years later, the Titanic disaster unfolded with eerie similarities, making Robertson’s story one of literature’s most chilling coincidences.

Entertainment

The First In-Flight Movie

Back in 1925, a British airline treated passengers to something brand new: an in-flight movie. Travellers flying on Imperial Airways watched the silent film The Lost World—decades before seatback screens and Wi-Fi were even imagined. It marked the quirky beginning of in-flight entertainment as we know it today.
