Battle of Waterloo (1815)
On June 18, 1815, near a small Belgian village, Napoleon Bonaparte faced British and Prussian forces in a battle that would seal his fate. Outnumbered and outmanoeuvred, his army was crushed after hours of brutal fighting.

Genetically Modified Food
What if we could grow more food, with better nutrition, in tougher conditions? That’s the promise of genetically modified (GM) crops. Scientists tweak plant genes—sometimes adding genes from other species—to make them resistant to drought, pests, or poor soil. Some are even engineered to pack more nutrients.
Golden rice, for example, is rich in vitamin A and designed to combat malnutrition in developing countries.
Why it matters: As climate change and population growth strain global food systems, genetic modification could help feed more people with fewer resources.

How Dams Release Water
Dams use three main systems to release water safely and efficiently:
Spillways act like emergency overflows. When water rises too high, it flows over or through the spillway to prevent flooding—no moving parts needed.
Sluice gates are adjustable gates near the dam’s base. Engineers lift or lower them to let water rush out at high speed, often to manage sediment or control river flow.
Outlet valves are like giant faucets. They control steady water release for irrigation, drinking supply, or power generation.

The Art Heist of the Century
On March 18, 1990, two men disguised as police officers entered Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. After tricking the guards and tying them up, they stole 13 pieces of art worth over $500 million.
The thieves spent 81 minutes inside. They bypassed more valuable works and cut specific masterpieces straight from their frames—frames that still hang empty in the museum today.
Over 30 years later, no one’s been arrested, and the paintings have never been found. The museum still offers a $10 million reward.
